Dallas’s History

John Neely Bryan, a lawyer from Tennessee with a taste for adventure, wandered into the area in 1839. He was impressed by what he believed to be the perfect place for a trading post and eventually a town. In 1841 after closing out all his affairs in Tennessee, Bryan returned to Dallas and laid claim to 640 acres of land. He sketched out a town, designated a courthouse square and 20 streets. The railroads arrived in 1870, fashion and elegance were redefined in 1907 when Neiman Marcus opened its doors in Downtown Dallas, in 1914 the 11th district Federal Reserve Bank branch opened in Dallas, SMU opened in 1915, Dallas Love Field Airport opened in 1927 in 1930 C.M. “Dad” Joyner struck oil 100 miles east of Dallas and in 1973 Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport opened in 1973. For every major public endeavor there have been countless private enterprising and entrepreneurial initiatives that have helped to put Dallas on the map as a place of booming business and commerce.
