City of McKinney City if McKinney McKinney Texas Wikipedia: McKinney wikipedia page Yelp Active Life in McKinney www.yelp.com/mckinney-tx McKinney’s History McKinney, TX named after Collin McKinney; a signer of the Declaration of Independence is a city and the County seat of Collin County. McKinney is one of the oldest towns in North Texas and dates back over 150 years when the first settlers arrived in the region from Kentucky, Arkansas and Tennessee. For the first 125 years McKinney served as the principal commercial center for Collin County. The county seat provided farmers with flour, corn, cotton mills, cotton gins, a cotton compress, and a cottonseed oil mill as well as banks, churches, schools, newspapers, and from the 1880’s an opera house. With the typical offer of 640 acres of land, a gun and help building a cabin, many settlers arrived braving adverse weather conditions, wild animals and indigenous people for the promise of free land. The population grew from 35 in 1848 to 4,714 in 1912. By 1953 McKinney had a population of more than 10,000 and 355 businesses. The town continued to serve as an agribusiness center for the county until the late 1960’s. Today the population of McKinney is over 128,000.
