Southern Methodist University, SMU, is a private research university in Dallas, Texas. Founded in 1911 by the Methodist Episcopal Church, the school was originally named "Southern Methodist University" but changed its name to "Southern Methodist University School of Law" in 1919. In 1934, the law school was separated from the rest of the university and moved to its current location in downtown Dallas. In 1968, the school returned to being named "Southern Methodist University." SMU is divided into three schools: Lane College of Business, Perkins School of Theology and Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences. The university also offers graduate programs through Dedman College and its own graduate school of arts & sciences as well as professional programs through the Cox School of Business, Dedman School of Law and Meadows School of the Arts.
Today, SMU offers undergraduate programs in business administration and management, engineering science, liberal arts and sciences, human development and family studies, communication studies, music (including jazz studies), dance (including ballet), arts management (including arts marketing), theatre arts (including musical theatre) and theatre design.
